"Struggling to cultivate love of coffee for decade" by: Jessica Shepard

I’ve always liked the smell of freshly brewed coffee and wished that it tasted as good as it smelled.
I think a few initial sips as a child ruined my taste buds from the beverage and have slowly eased my way back into the world of coffee.
Off and on through my teen, college, and young adult years, I searched for a way to make coffee palatable.
In fact, my mom told me that she didn’t acquire a taste for those bitter little beans until she was in her 30s.
And, well, it seems I may have followed suit in that respect, more or less.
Though I’m much pickier than her and turn down the boring, regular cups of joe.
I hate how bitter coffee has always tasted and refuse to drink it without enough sugar and cream to make it delicious.
Plus, if it isn’t brewed right and I get coffee grounds in my cup, I’ll probably throw a fit to rival any two-year-old.
It’s been a constant struggle to find something I enjoyed drinking – meaning its taste was pleasing and didn’t make me gag.
I’ve also found out that I severely dislike drinking hot beverages aside from lukewarm apple cider for the holiday season.
Everything else has to be iced or chilled to perfection!
And sure, Starbucks gives you about a million options and can customize your drink to your heart’s desire, but, it can get overwhelming.
After spending too much money trying drinks recommended by my friends, I’ve learned to mostly stick to tea or crème-based drinks.

Mostly because I don’t have to sweeten them as much as I do with regular coffee beverages and partially because they’re less complicated.
That being said, my sister, Ashlee recently became an advocate for Bones Coffee Company and has introduced the entire house to said company.
They’ve got seasonal coffee blends, decaffeinated and hot cocoa options.
Plus, the merchandise features hilariously creative art along with the bags of coffee.
Now, we’re still a bit divided on flavors and so forth since mom has always preferred dark roasts.
I’m all about trying anything once and wish the company had a sample pack of Keurig-approved cups.
Mike just gets stuck with whatever is in the pot for the morning and I feel a little bad for him.
Then again, he drinks his black with enough sugar to kill a small animal, so, I don’t feel so bad for subjecting him to coffee bean taste tests.
We do have some common middle ground when it comes to coffee flavored with caramel, vanilla, and some other sweet notes.
That still doesn’t keep me from committing caffeine blasphemy by icing it with about a quarter cup of sweet cream before I even take one sip.
There are plenty of weird flavors that I’m hesitant to try like birthday cakes, peaches and cream, and salted pretzel – none of those sound particularly delicious, and yet, I still would try them.
I mean, got a sample pack of coffee based on caramel apples and fell in love with it, though the apple notes were lost under the caramel.
Regardless, I’m all about the flavored coffees without having to add syrups or special powders and refuse the plain, ordinary roasts.
