"County ratifies emergency response letter with STP, cities" by: Mike Reddell

Commissioners Court ratified a letter of agreement supporting STP during emergencies, drills and exercises at the court’s regular meeting Monday, Dec. 6.
The annual agreement is between STP, the county and the cities of Bay City and Palacios.
Under the agreement, the county provides emergency services requested by state or federal authorities if there is a disaster declaration.
In addition, the county also will provide resources to STP in case of a major nuclear accident.
Matagorda County extension agents gave their year-end summaries to the court Monday.
Greg Baker, the county agent for agriculture, told the court about public event plans on topics including feral hogs, watersheds and local agricultural industries.
Denise Grisham, the 4-H program administrator, said there are close to 400 members, pointing out a Dec. 11 district competition and the upcoming county fair in 2022.
Gabby Kanu, agent for Family and Community Health, talked about online programs provided during the pandemic, the county fair’s food show – last year there were 536 entries – and the county’s cultural diversity.
Marine Agent Nicole Pilson told commissioners she does a “whole bunch of everything” in her job that includes advocating for local seafood.
“I want people to know that seafood is accessible,” she said.
    In other action, the court:

  •     Renewed an emergency management consulting agreement with the county and Doug Matthes Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2022.

Emergency Management Coordinator Amanda Campos said a FEMA grant funds Matthes’ position.

  •     Approved an agreement between the county and Tyler Technologies to get a new inmate tracking system.

Sheriff Skipper Osborne said the mandated new system’s $16,000 cost will be funded by a grant from NCIC.

  •     Tabled action to transfer a pumper truck from Sargent Volunteer Fire Department to the Van Vleck Volunteer Fire Department.

Commissioners Bubba Cook and Kent Pollard, Precincts 1 and 2, both said they were unclear which trucks were involved in the transfer.
David Pettit, the consultant on the proposed Bold Fox Development near Schulman’s MBG, and Scott Hardwick, Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation executive director, both went into executive session with the court.
No action was taken after the closed meeting.
