New confirmed cases of COVID-19 are showing a significant increase with the start of 2022.
State health charts show a spike in new cases for Matagorda County, with 66 new cases on Jan. 3 alone, followed by 59 new cases Jan. 2 and 19 Dec. 31.
The county’s COVID-19 trajectory had been on a decline through mid-December, but it’s been on a steady climb since.
The per capita rate of new cases shows a sharp increase from last week, with 5.6 new cases per 1,000 residents and 202 new cases in the last 14 days, according to the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
That’s a jump from Dec. 27, which had 3.1 cases per 1,000 and 114 new cases from the previous 14 days.
Overall, Matagorda County has 6,560 confirmed cases and 162 deaths.
Statewide, DSHS indicates increases in hospitalizations, new cases and new deaths.
On Jan. 1, 52,205 new cases were reported in Texas, bringing the seven-day average to 20,363.
As of Dec. 29, 19.3 million people have received at least one dose, which is 66.3% of Texas’ population, and 16.5 million people, or 56.5%, are fully vaccinated.
So far, 4.7 million people, or 16.1%, have gotten booster shots.
In Matagorda County, 16,452 residents, or 45.4% of the county’s total population of 36,255 are fully vaccinated and 12.6%, or 4,584 residents have gotten booster shots.
