Bay City High School speech and theater teacher Magda Mirelez will be one of a select few recipients of the 2022 National Federation of State High School Associations Citation award.
The Citation is one of the highest awards presented by the NFHS and is given annually to individuals who have made exemplary, significant and longstanding contributions to high school sports and activities.
Typically, not more than 20 people each year receive a Citation, and typically only one Speech/Debate/Theater director receives the award each year.
“One of the joys of this position is the opportunity to participate in the process of rewarding individuals who make great contributions to young people,” NFHS CEO Karissa L. Niehoff wrote to Mrs. Mirelez in a letter.
“With that thought in mind, I wish to extend to you our congratulations for your selection as a 2022 recipient of the prestigious NFHS Citation Award.
This award recognizes your commitment to the youth served by our member state associations and your support of the NFHS mission.”
In her time at BCHS, Mirelez has coached and directed multiple state champions in speech, debate, and theater.
This includes four consecutive UIL Speech team championships from 2005-2008 and four consecutive Cross-Examination Debate championships from 2004-2007.
Under her direction, BCHS has made six One-Act Play state finals and won two championships in 1999 and 2003.
Mirelez will be presented with the Citation at a luncheon in San Antonio on June 30.
