Loy Sneary, John Dickerson and George Deshotels recently launched a successful effort to recognize the accomplishments of the late Haskell Simon.
They were successful in getting generous donations for a marker with benches on the Colorado River. A ceremony in January celebrated that effort.
The funds that the three received from 28 donors more than covered that marker, so the three men - Friends of Haskell Simon - decided a good use of those donations was six scholarships to the LCRA Matagorda Bay Nature Park summer day camp.
Simon was devoted to the river and waters of Matagorda County.
Sneary said Simon would be thrilled to know those funds will be used for educating children.
The kids will come from families who couldn’t afford the camp.
Two are from Tenie Holmes Elementary, one from Matagorda Elementary and three from the Boys & Girls Club.
There’s three different camps this summer for the kids to attend.
