The Bay City Public Library is launching its annual Summer Reading Program with the theme, “Oceans of Possibilities,” on Wednesday, June 1.
“Generously supported by the Bay City Library Association, Friends of the Bay City Library, and Friends of the Sargent Library, this year’s ocean-themed program will inspire readers of all ages to dive into reading,” said BCPL Library Director Samantha Denbow.
“Summer activities kick off the week of June 13 at both the Bay City and Sargent branches. All events except for specified art programs at the main branch and the ‘End of Summer’ program at the Sargent branch, will be seated on a first-come basis.”
All sign-up information and forms can be picked up at the library.
The 2022 Reading Challenge has a whole new look this year.
Participants of any age can enroll in the Reading Challenge through the ReaderZone app or online.
“The more you read from June 1-July 31, the more Library Bucks you earn to select items from the Library Store at the library,” she added.
The top three readers in each age group, each month will be invited to a special Top Reader Party in early August.
“Our programs are designed to encourage reading and learning for all ages,” said Denbow.
“The effects of the pandemic on academics coupled with the ‘summer slide’ are impacting our community.
“Our goal is to provide free activities that are fun and educational so that we build a community of life-long learners.”
The library will host a Kaiāulu Luau with activities, dessert, and a full performance from Hiti Mahana Polynesia out of New Braunfels from 5:30-7 p.m.on Thursday, June 23 at the library.
There will be local organizations on-site providing activities and sharing information as well.
Other activities this summer include Library Mini Golf, Tiny Art Judged Exhibit, Mad Science Show, age-appropriate programs, year-round programs, and special art programs.
“We are excited to bring Hiti Mahana Polynesia back to Bay City as part of our Summer Reading Program,” said Denbow.
“Their interactive performance of dancers and drummers allows the community to experience the Polynesia culture up close and personal. ‘Kaiāulu’ means community in Hawaiian.
After the last two years, we cannot wait to celebrate our community in an exciting way!”
