Mason: Airport sign project took flight

Airport Manager James Mason tells how the new FM 2540 frontage sign at Bay City Regional
Airport came about.
In September 2021, Hurricane Nicholas even at the lowest category, caused devastating damages to our local community with wind shears recorded as high as 75 mph sustained, Mason said.
One of the casualties of this was the airport highway frontage sign.
The airport sustained damage to the roof over the JetA fueling tank, as well as roof damage to our main hangar.
The doors on the east side of our T-hangar A row were also damaged.
“Once the roof damage was repaired and the damage to A row was in the engineer’s hands, I made installing a new sign a top priority,” Masoon said.
“I knew it would be a lengthy project, but with the help of TxDOT Aviation, Civil PE’s, Savage Fab, A Team Landscaping, and Wendell Electric, I began the project.”
This project was funded by the TxDOT RAMP grant.
The engineering was completed by Civil PE’s, Mason said.
The base of the sign was installed by A Team Landscaping.
The sign was constructed, powder coated and installed by Savage Fab.
Wendell Electric installed the LED lighting for the sign.
With the design, and Savage Fab’s know how, the vision seemed to “take flight” effortlessly, Mason pointed out.
“It was very exciting for all parties to work on something so unique,” he said.
“The company worked tirelessly to get a finished product in under a tight deadline.
The finished product is an absolute sight to be seen.
“It exudes new life and pride for our 54 year old Bay City Regional Airport and the surrounding community,” Mason declared.
