Victoria-based business owners, Lorna Youngand Donna Lemke, have created a safe space for senior citizens to voice and share life experiences, hardships, lessons and solutions learned from aging.
With hard work from both Young and Lemke, the social platform, 65 Now What, is making it’s home right here within the Crossroads community.
The platform will ultimately be used as a common place for individuals to share stories, tips, and expertise regarding a plethora of concerns such as financial and physical elder abuse, doctors, hospitals, and nursing home failures, scams, travel and retirement relocations, domestic and foreign, suggestions to lower the cost of living, and entertainment, including stories, hobbies, interests, and more.
Lorna Young, owner of 65 Now What, shares, “We are really hoping to build a platform that allows for senior citizens to express their outlook on life as well as how they navigate day-to-day experiences.
As people age, their family members often move away or are also tending to families of their own, so we hope to build a community of individuals that can rely on one another for guidance and confidence in their relative aging experiences.”
Co-owner, Donna Lemke, adds, “I originally had this idea after being inspired by a dream that showed me if you do not bring to light negative things happening to the elderly now, you will suffer from the same things later.
That is, by not speaking out against harmful situations, you are actually condoning them, not only in others’ lives but yours also.”
We all know when it comes to being taken advantage of, the elderly are easy targets, in spite of their intelligence, wisdom, skill, experience, and education.
Though we are aging,
we are vital
It is our hope that this website prepares others to have a heads up when any events similar to these stories seem to be presenting themselves in their lives or environment.
According to the FBI, reported losses more than doubled from 2017 to 2021 with elder fraud increasing from $343 million to $1.685 billion.
Young and Lemke want to present a platform for senior citizens, inviting them to share their personal stories, insight, and advice. Times change.
Informational news of interest regarding our age group changes and demands our attention.
This is the place to bring these things to light.
This website will be a non-stop malleable and vital work in progress for you to enjoy.
Suggestions of topics and improvements to make the website more functional and usable would be appreciated.
