Bay City Veterinary Clinic and Equine Hospital celebrated its 70th year anniversary with a recent Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture after-hours mixer.
The clinic has a long history of serving the animals and their owners in the Matagorda County, said Dr. Randy Volkmer.
It all began in 1953 with Dr. Maynard Frankson and Dr .Wayne Slone forming a partnership that would become what is now known as Bay City Veterinary Clinic and Equine Hospital.
The original Bay City Veterinary Clinic was built on Nichols Avenue next to Slone’s homeplace.
That facility cared for animals until 2003, at which point, under the partnership of Volkmer and Dr. Ralph Cole, the current facility was built at 4501 7th Street.
Today the clinic is owned by three partners, Volkmer, Dr. Josh Shield and Dr. Brian Sherman.
The clinic team has grown since 1991 employing two veterinarians and two full-time staff members, to four full time veterinarians, two part-time veterinarians as well as 17 support staff.
The doctors are experienced in treating all types of conditions in both large animals and small animals and they continue to research the most innovative practices in veterinary medicine.
They currently see approximately 20 thousand clients and their pets a year.
The clients come from Matagorda County primarily but approximately 20% come from outside that area.
