Bay City High School (BCHS) CTE welding students had the opportunity to take what they learned in the classroom and apply it to a real world project.
In the fall of this school year, Crestwood Tres Palacios Gas Storage facility manager, Sean Sleigh, reached out to the school district to work with some of the welding students on a project.
“I would enjoy the opportunity to brainstorm on some ways we can get students real-world experience and solve issues I have at the same time.”
To get the project started, Sleigh invited the BCHS welding instructors to come tour the Tres Palacios Gas plant and work on project ideas.
He shared that when his employees are working on their tall platforms, they run the risk of their hand tools falling off.
Sleigh prides his facility on being a safe place to work and he also wanted to find a way to work with Bay City high school students.
After collaboration, Sleigh challenged the welding students to build four toolboxes for the facility’s work platforms.
The toolboxes would be used to hold the tools for anyone working on their platforms.
After months of preparation, the students have completed the project and are ready to deliver to the facility.
Justin Rodriguez, one of the BCHS CTE welding instructors on the project, proudly shared, “Our students have learned a lot from this hands-on project, like reading a welding blueprint, pull measurements, and how to fit and make it all square. “Most of all, they learned a little bit more about how to fabricate.”
This entire project was a great example of how invested the community is in Bay City ISD students.
The district is grateful to Crestwood Palacios Gas Storage for believing in Bay City ISD and creating more opportunities for the staff and students.
