From Dan Shook
Bay City Fire Marshal
A light fixture above an apartment stairwell - believed damaged from a previous fire - is blamed for an apartment building fire at 4408 Hiram Brandon, building E. Friday, April 28, Fire Marshal Dan Shook reported.
Bay City Fire Department and Bay City Police
Department were sent to the fire at about 1:19 p.m. Friday and the first responding units saw smoke coming from the eves of the building.
The fire was confined to the alcove above the southeast stairwell, said Shook, who responded and investigated the fire.
The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes, he added.
A previous fire occurred in December 2022 at apartment No. 34, so all the apartments in building E were vacant.
Because of the original fire, electricity to the individual apartments was disconnected, Shook explained.
However, electricity to the building lighting for the stairwells was fed from a different area of the complex, which was not known during the original fire.
This fire originated in a light fixture above the stairwell, believed to have been damaged from the previous fire.
The common electricity for the whole complex stairwell lighting was disconnected to prevent further damage.
No one was injured during this incident.
The damage from this fire was estimated at $1,500.
The fire marshal is working with the complex owner to restore lighting to the buildings not affected by fire.
