Bay City Fire Marshal Dan Shook reminds residents that illegal dumping is a crime.
“If caught, you can face steep fines up to thousands of dollars or possibly even jail time,” he said.
Illegal dumping has many negative effects on the environment, Shook pointed out.
“Toxic substances and chemicals can leach into the soil, contaminating the ground and nearby waterways.
“Plastic products also pollute rivers, lakes and streams. Wildlife such as birds and fish can be harmed if they consume plastic waste or become entangled in it,” Shook added.
Illegal dumping can also be a fire hazard. Piles of trash and discarded chemicals can combine to create combustible gases and fuel for fires.
Shook advises residents to stay vigilant and to report illegal dumping.
“Note the time, location and vehicle description and license plate if possible. A description of the perpetrator is also helpful. Also take note of the items being dumped,” Shook said.
The fire marshal also urged businesses to place “No dumping” signs and to lock dumpsters.
