Bay City airport part of A&M’s record breaking lightning detection system

Bay City Regional Airport recently learned that it was part of a lightning detection system that recorded the world’s longest single lightning flash on April 29, 2020.
It traveled a distance of 477.2 miles, plus or minus 5 miles, from the southern Texas Gulf Coast to Mississippi.
“This is a new Guinness World Record!
“Bay City Regional Airport is proud to be home of A&M’s southernmost lightning detection system and to support the research efforts of Texas A&M!” the airport posted on Facebook.
The airport learned of Bay City airport’s part last week from Timothy Logan, an assistant professor with A&M, “who stopped by today with some exciting news.”
