Bay City Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Riverside Park Community Tree Give Away was selected for recognition in the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) annual Water WISE Awards Program.
The WISE Award program is overseen by the Natural Resource Advisory Committee of the H-GAC. This program recognizes and celebrates projects, programs and individuals using innovative strategies to protect and improve water resources in the Houston-Galveston region.
Scenic Texas and Bay City Parks and Recreation partnered to give away 2,000 (3-5 gallon) trees to residents to plant as a part of Scenic Texas’ 1 Million Trees Across Texas Initiative.
Scenic Texas’ program is the only statewide program that supports sustainable landscaping and increases tree planting in overlooked rural to mid-size communities of Texas.
This tree planting program improves the scenic quality of natural and built landscapes, aims to support environmental conservation, preserves native trees, maintains green spaces and enhances the sustainability of communities across the state.
Residents dropped by Riverside Park (7330 FM 2668) on Saturday, Jan. 14, to pick up their two trees and instructions on how to plant and care for the tree while supplies last.
A total of 1,200 trees were picked up and planted by residents and 800 trees were planted at Riverside Park and at parks across the city by the Parks and Recreation Staff.
“We are proud of the efforts of our park staff to improve the quality of our environment and our community. Bay City has some great parks, with Riverside being a crown jewel and it is an honor to be recognized by H-GAC.” said Shawn Blackburn, Director of Bay City Parks and Recreation.
Projects recognized by this awards program are selected by a panel of expert judges and industry professionals.
The City of Bay City and other winners were honored during an online celebration on July 14th.
