Fire Marshal: Unattended candle blamed on blaze that damages 10th Street house

From Fire Marshal Dan Shook

A house fire at 2408 10th St. Monday, July 24, was blamed on a candle that was left burning when the homeowner left the residence that morning.
Bay City Fire Department, Bay City Police Department, and Bay City Fire Marshal went to the fire that was called in by a mail carrier who was driving by and identified smoke and flames coming from the house, said Fire Marshal Dan Shook.
On scene, Shook and police officers could see smoke from the roof and a side window.
Entry was forced into the house, as no one was home at the time of the fire, Shook said.
The fire was contained to the bedroom of the residence, with smoke damage throughout the residence.  The damage is estimated to be about $15,000.
No one was injured in this incident, Shook said.
The fire marshal said he wants to remind citizens to ensure that candles are always attended to when burning.
“If you need to leave a candle, ensure that it is fully extinguished,” he said.
