United Way ‘Day of Caring’ applications due March 22

Matagorda County United Way (MCUW) has designated Friday, April 26 as the “14th Annual Day of Caring” and applications for minor home repair services are now available.
All applications are due by Friday, March 22.
This community-wide effort is a day when nearly 100 volunteers work on projects making minor repairs to the homes of elderly or disabled community members.
“The event is a unique opportunity for volunteers to see how their time and generosity impact the individuals in our community,” said MCUW Executive Director Elizabeth Quillin in a press release.
“The day will be a busy and fulfilling day for participants and an experience everyone who has ever participated in looks forward to each year.”
Applications to request minor home repairs are now available at the United Way office at 2417 Ave. G or at the Economic Action Committee Senior Center at 904 Whitson St. - both in Bay City.
Interested persons may also call the MCUW at 979-245-5852 to have an application mailed to them.
To be eligible, an applicant must be a senior citizen 65 years of age or older or have a disability, and they must own their home.
Examples of eligible repairs include painting; installing bathroom safety grips; power washing houses, driveways and sidewalks; yard maintenance and beautification; spring cleaning, changing door locks; planting flowers; repairing window screens; replacing light bulbs; and other small carpentry projects.
“One-hundred percent of the work is done by community volunteers on the Day of Caring.
Materials are provided and there is no cost to the homeowner,” she added.
“Matagorda County United Way is also seeking volunteers and sponsorships as well.”
