My siblings made it home in time for Mother’s Day last weekend.
And while it was a fast and furious family get-together with a mostly quick turnaround, the overarching goal was to make sure mom was happy.
I think we accomplished that goal for the most part – plus, my sister has decided to extend her stay for a full week.
So that should make mom’s happiness last a bit longer in my book.
To sum up our Mother’s Day outing we pretty much only did what she wanted to do for the day.
That included enduring an early bird trip to Lowe’s home improvement store for free and reduced-price plants first thing in the morning.
After, we made a few stops at a handful of other chain stores – Target, Academy, Daiso, and 99 Ranch Market.
While we were exploring Daiso, mom finally picked a place to have her Mother’s Day lunch, we ended up at Roadhouse devouring fresh rolls and an onion blossom before savoring steaks.
The trek home went rather well and we were hoping for rain while we were out of town, but came home to pouting pets and not a drop of water in sight.
If we had gotten any rain at all, it must have been so miniscule that the puddles nearly evaporated!
However, we still had high hopes for the upcoming forecast of the week.
That might be a bit selfish on my part, but I’m tired of competing for better water pressure when mom is running water hoses on both sides of the house to tend to her plants.
I mean, I’m writing this for press Monday afternoon as rain and wind make our power and internet signal to flicker intermittently.
Still, I’m not too mad because we’ve needed the rain for a while despite the influx of mosquitoes it’ll bring.
Honestly, the only thing I worry about is Tidehaven’s graduation ceremony on Friday – rain any other time during the week is more than fine with me.
After all, we’ve got cracks in the yard going down for several inches and mom’s garden isn’t looking too bountiful right now either.
Well, unless you’re needing cherry tomatoes, she’s got handfuls of those little guys trying to hide from an assortment of pests – chickens included!
Everything else is hiding between a variety of weeds and grass while fighting for their own water and sunlight.
While I know that mom planted over 20 different tomato plant varieties, I’m only really concerned about those and the peppers.
Making salsa to send as gifts to family members and close friends is always the goal for me – anything beyond that is a moot point.
Plus, we’re not going to re-hash my disgust for squash again.
Besides, if you’ve read it once then you’ve probably read it a thousand times.
But, while I’m watching the rainwater collecting in the low-lying areas of the front yard, all I can do is be grateful anyway.
We’ve got enough cans of mosquito repellant that I will gladly weather whatever Mother Nature throws at us and still thank her for the rain in the same breath.
After all, it’s sort of like a Mother’s Day gift for when mom’s garden gets some relief.
