"Expanding educational horizons with Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust support" By Amy Nowlin

Matagorda County Coastal & Marine Resources

The natural world offers endless opportunities for wonder and discovery. Exposure to diverse ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental phenomena can spark a lifelong passion for science and nature.
Employed by Matagorda County-Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, I have had the privilege of organizing and implementing environmental educational programs that positively impact children’s lives.
As the Coastal and Marine Resources Agent, I create meaningful educational programs centered on native wildlife, coastal habitats, and marine biology. I also cover topics like watersheds, the importance of water quality, green infrastructure, and coastal resilience.
By incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), I dive deep into the wonders of our environment, ensuring students don’t just fish for a day but grasp the science that sustains our thriving coasts.
In addition to my educational programs, I aim to work with local schools and educational organizations to integrate environmental learning into their curricula.
Whether through field trips or classroom projects, these programs provide students with hands-on learning opportunities that complement their academic studies.
From my perspective, environmental and outdoor learning experiences provide children with invaluable opportunities to step out of their comfort zones and try new activities.
Concepts taught in science come to life when children can observe and interact with real-world examples.
Such curiosity encourages children to ask questions, seek answers, and develop a deeper understanding of their surroundings.
Whether it’s navigating a nature trail, fishing for the first time, identifying local flora and fauna, or participating in team-building exercises, I see firsthand how these activities help them build confidence and generate newfound interests.
Watching students’ eyes light up as they discover something new in nature is a rewarding reminder of the importance of these experiences.
One of the most profound impacts of outdoor learning I have witnessed is its ability to cultivate a sense of environmental stewardship in children.
When children spend time in nature and learn about the delicate balance of ecosystems, they develop a sense of responsibility toward protecting the environment.
This awareness can inspire them to adopt sustainable practices and assist with community conservation efforts.
Environmental learning also creates a unique social environment where children can form meaningful connections with their peers.
Shared experiences, such as working together to solve a problem or supporting each other during a challenge can lead to strong bonds and lasting friendships.
With the generous support of a grant from the Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust (MBMT), a world of new educational resources has become available to me.
I’m thrilled to expand my expertise and capabilities, enhancing the environmental programming at the newly established YMCA summer camps in Palacios and Bay City.
These resources are also accessible for Matagorda 4-H and all schools within Matagorda ISD.
Whether it’s conducting water quality tests, utilizing watershed models, or making observations through digital microscopes these resources will be crucial in deepening students’ knowledge and understanding of environmental science.
I am immensely grateful for the MBMT’s support and the chance to make a meaningful impact on young learners’ lives. Together, we are empowering the next generation of environmental stewards and shaping a brighter, more sustainable future!
