Overcoming cybersecurity malware attack: County announces progress, next steps

Matagorda County Emergency Operation Center

Matagorda County is pleased to announce significant progress in recovering from the recent cybersecurity malware attack that impacted county systems.
Two weeks have passed since the attack, and the determination of our dedicated team, including county officials, IT specialists, and staff from various departments, has been unwavering.
Together, we are moving forward with confidence, and our systems are steadily coming back online.
A Unified Effort Across County Departments
Throughout this challenging period, every department, from the Auditor’s Office to the District Attorney’s Office and the District Judge’s office, has worked tirelessly to support recovery efforts.
The leadership from the County Clerk’s office has been particularly noteworthy, ensuring that our operations remain transparent and that citizens are informed.
“Our team has risen to the occasion,” said Stephanie Wurtz, Matagorda County Clerk.
“While it’s been a difficult few weeks, we are committed to ensuring that all essential county services are restored as quickly as possible. We are grateful for the cooperation and resilience shown by all departments.”
Progress in recovery: Replacing, enhancing systems
As part of the recovery process, we’ve opted to fully replace and enhance specific items in line with recommendations from the Department of Information Resources (DIR).
This decision was made to not only restore our systems to full functionality but to future-proof them and improve overall cybersecurity for the long term.
While the recovery process is taking a bit longer than anticipated, it’s important to note that we are not just replacing what was lost. We are enhancing our infrastructure to ensure greater security, reliability, and efficiency moving forward.
“We’re not just putting the pieces back together; we’re building a stronger, more secure foundation for the future,” said Bobby Seiferman, Matagorda County Judge.
All necessary software, hardware located, purchased
We are pleased to report that all necessary software and hardware have been located and purchased to support the new systems.
These new systems are already in the process of being installed, and county staff are undergoing rigorous training to ensure smooth operation once the systems are fully operational.
  Ongoing commitment to public service
Matagorda County remains committed to serving its residents without interruption.
We understand that some services may be slower than usual, but we are working tirelessly to ensure that all systems are restored, and we appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we work toward a safer, more secure future.
As we continue to enhance our cybersecurity infrastructure, we will provide further updates to the public.
In the meantime, we urge all residents to continue to reach out to county offices for any questions.
