Kharrl named CEO, CNO of STP

STP Nuclear Operating Company Board of Directors has selected Chuck Kharrl as President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO), effective June 9.
Kharrl brings more than 25 years of experience in the nuclear industry, most recently serving as President and Chief Nuclear Officer of Energy Solutions.
He has a background in nuclear operations and management and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Arizona.
“We are truly excited to have Chuck joining STP to lead the company into the future,” said Chris Mudrick, STP Board of Directors Chairman and Constellation Energy Sr. Vice President Generation Growth.
“His track record of success, in-depth experience and passion for driving improvement will undoubtedly help build upon the company’s success and bring tremendous value to employees and owners alike.”
“With energy demand on the rise statewide, it’s more important than ever to have experienced, forward-thinking leadership,” added Jack Borsch, STP board member and Austin Energy Director of Energy Operations. “We look forward to Chuck guiding us into this next chapter and are excited about the opportunities ahead for STP.”
Before taking this role, Kharrl has held such roles as Vice President of Site Operations at Palo Verde Nuclear Station, Site Vice President at Farley Nuclear Plant, and various leadership positions with Southern Nuclear Company. He has extensive experience in overseeing fleet governance, project management and outage services.
“I’m honored to be offered this opportunity at STP and incredibly excited about what lies ahead,” said Kharrl. “I’m looking forward to getting started and working with the team to learn and lead as we build toward future success together.”
Kym Harshaw, who has served as STP’s CNO since November 2021 and Interim CEO since April 2024, will be retiring in June and working closely with Kharrl to ensure a smooth transition. “On behalf of the board, we want to thank Kym for her leadership and dedication to STP,” said Larry Blaylock, STP board member and CPS Energy Managing Fellow Nuclear Oversight. “Her contributions over the course of her 9-year tenure have helped lay the foundation for the success to come. We congratulate her on her well-deserved retirement.”
STP’s two units produce 2,700 megawatts of carbon-free energy, powering more than two million homes throughout Texas. The facility is managed by STP Nuclear Operating Company and owned by Austin Energy (16%), CPS Energy (40%) and Constellation Energy (44%).
