Bay City lifts pool fee to sustain, expand community aquatics programming

From BCCDC

The City of Bay City and Bay City Community Development Corporation (BCCDC) are committed to ensuring access to safe, high-quality recreational facilities for all residents - especially our youth.
As part of this commitment, the entry fee for the city’s public pool will be adjusted from $1 to $4 starting this summer.
This change comes as Bay City enters a new partnership with the YMCA to manage day-to-day operations at the city pool.
The YMCA brings proven expertise in aquatics programming, safety, and community engagement.
Their management ensures a more structured, supervised, and enriching experience for families and swim team members throughout the summer months.
“There are real costs associated with professional pool management - lifeguards, equipment, training, safety protocols, and programming,” said Jessica Russell, Executive Director of Bay City CDC.
“This fee adjustment helps to maintain a high standard of service, while keeping the pool open and accessible for the kids and families who depend on it each summer.”
This is not just about maintaining a pool - it’s about preserving a critical community resource.
Pools serve as gathering places, learning environments, and foundations for future opportunities through programs like swim teams and youth employment.
They are essential to our identity and quality of life.
As part of that commitment, the YMCA is also launching ‘Family Nights’ every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., where admission will be just $2 per person.
Families are encouraged to attend together, making this a fun, low-cost way to enjoy summer evenings while spending meaningful time together.
The BCCDC, City of Bay City, and Matagorda County are working toward an even larger goal: the development of a full aquatic center in Bay City, also in partnership with the YMCA and Matagorda Wellness.
The continued success and use of our current pools is key to justifying and sustaining that long-term investment.
“Our vision includes a year-round aquatic facility that serves everyone - from toddlers to seniors, athletes to beginners,” said Shauna Broz, YMCA Bay City Program Director.
“But we can’t get there without supporting what we already have.”
The increase to $4 still places Bay City among the most affordable public pool options in the region, and ensures that the pools remain open, safe, and well-run.
Financial assistance options may be available through YMCA programming for families in need.
