‘ Stewards of History’

Karen Restivo
In Other Words....

Future generations will be tasked with carrying the torch forward representing our nation by accepting responsibility as leaders addressing the challenges they will encounter with strength, knowledge and integrity.
It will require strong shoulders to balance and to preserve continued groundwork sustaining peace, security, respect for the law, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Part of the arsenal they have in their possession are the echoes of yesterday preserved by past generations that understood the necessity of historical documentation needed in future decision making.
As writer and philosopher George Santayana put it, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
We owe a debt of gratitude to those individuals and organizations that prioritize our local history by performing a crucial service ensuring our future generations have access to our shared past.
I was reminded recently how blessed our community is when it comes to individuals volunteering to protect and preserve our vital archives.
The Matagorda Historical Society MHS exhibits strong leadership and dedication as the stewards of Matagorda’s legacy.
As an organization, it takes an incredible amount of passion and an abundance of patience to respectfully educate, showcase and fundraise for the long-term survival of our treasured history.
The current MHS officers are: Cindy Howell (President), Dawn Gerstenberger (Vice President), Margie Wilkins (Secretary), Sabrina Hamilton (Treasurer), and Bill Gerstenberger (Parliamentarian).
An exponential amount of time, talent & treasure (grants) has generated remarkable renovation and restoration of the historical buildings on site.
Christmas in July is the Matagorda Historical Society’s primary fundraiser happening from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, July 5, in Matagorda at the corner of Fisher and Laurel Streets.
It will feature over 50 vendors, a petting zoo, a train for children, art sessions by Art Hauz for kids and adults (check Art Hauz on Facebook for more information on the prepaid fees and class schedule), a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, food, drinks, snacks and more.
In other words, if you’re unable to prioritize time as a steward of history volunteer, this is your opportunity to come out with your family and friends to support this noble cause celebrating our freedom on this 4th of July holiday weekend.
Each of us can make a difference in the quality and care of Matagorda’s historical legacy.
  I’ll see you there.
