The Wharton County Junior College Foundation hosted its fourth annual Super Science Alliance at the Bay City Civic Center, an event that engages sixth-grade students through hands-on science activities and discussions about STEM careers in the local community on Oct. 23.
More than 500 students from Matagorda County schools joined industry leaders for a superhero-themed educational day.
This year’s event, themed “Ignite Curiosity,” was made possible by title sponsor LyondellBasell, one of the area’s prominent employers.
Major sponsors also included STP Nuclear Operating Company, Tenaris (Bay City), Underground Services Markham, Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF), and Wharton
gave these sponsors the chance to demonstrate how science, technology, engineering, and math play an essential role in their daily work, and how these fields shape the future of Matagorda County.
“LyondellBasell proudly participates in the Super Science Alliance.
“We are committed to supporting educational initiatives that empower the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.” Matagorda Site Manager Michael Middleton said.
“When students see how STEM connects to real-world careers, it opens their eyes to possibilities they may not have considered before.
“We want them to know that their future can start right here in Matagorda County.”
Community leaders, including Bay City Mayor Robert Nelson, Palacios Mayor Rick Cink, and Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman, showed their support by encouraging the students to be curious about STEM and their local community.
“The Super Science Alliance is one of the most inspiring events we support each year,” said Foundation President Gary Gillen.
“Seeing the students light up with curiosity reminds us why investing in the education of the next generation of innovators matters so much.”
