A bedroom fire claimed the life of an 80-year-old man on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 5.
Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, Bay City Police Department, and the Bay City Fire Marshal responded to a report of a fire at about 11:33 p.m. at 2305 Horn Rd.
The fire was discovered by a female resident who found her father in his bedroom with the bed still smoldering.
While the man did not suffer burns, authorities suspect he succumbed to smoke inhalation, Fire Marshal Dan Shook said.
Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and were able to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the bed area. Despite their efforts, the elderly resident was found dead in the bedroom.
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Suzanne Sullivan responded to the scene and has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, Shook said.
The loss from the fire is estimated at $15,000.
The Bay City Fire Marshal’s Office is actively investigating the cause of the fire, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
