I have to confess that I’ve mostly forgotten about the Olympic Games until some advertisement flashed across Facebook to remind me that they’re coming in February.
Well, at least the winter games are coming to Italy starting on Feb. 6 with the actual opening ceremony to begin on Feb. 4
Is it just me or is it a little weird that the events are starting before the actual opening ceremony?
I mean, unless I’ve not paid very close attention in the last 20 years – which is entirely possible!
I’m just excited to see what the Italians have cooked up since I really enjoyed France’s opener in summer 2024.
I don’t know how Italy can beat
having French heavy metal band Gojira playing the French Revolution song “Ça Ira” with opera singer Marina Viotti, but I’m thrilled to see how it all plays out!
I mean, I know several Italian heavy metal bands and am not going to hold my breath to see if they have made the cut as entertainers.
I just hope that it can live up to France’s example since Gojira won a Grammy for that performance!
Still, my inner child is more than a little excited to try and catch some competition via NBC.
And of all the different types of games – speed skating, ice hockey, curling, bobsleigh, skiing, snowboarding and so forth?
Figure skating has always been at the top of my list to carve out time to watch.
Even if it’s just recaps and clips at the end of the day, I’m glued to either my TV or cellphone to try and catch dazzling costumes, unique choreography, and interesting music choices for each and every athlete that represents their country.
I don’t know how best to describe my curiosity and interest because I’ve never bothered to learn the rules, technical requirements, and grading criteria.
I do know that I find most of it mesmerizing, beautiful and artistic – sort of like admiring gorgeous choreography on stage or in other movies or shows.
I think my only personal critiques come from being confused by the athlete choosing that snippet of music or the designs they sport as their costumes.
After all, my closest experiences on ice were watching strangers enjoy it in the Galleria and wanting to stick close during the summer to soak up that ambient chill.
Even before my broken leg experience, my sense of balance and patience weren’t to be relied on by any measure, so I’m more than alright with watching fondly from the comfort of the couch.
Plus, I was horrible at rollerblading and roller-skating as a child and I just know that clumsy uncertainty would give me exponential anxiety if I had ever taken it to the ice.
Though I still maintain that if the Olympics had an average person competing during an event, people would appreciate all the years of dedication and hard work that athletes endured to reach such a milestone like the Olympics.
Plus, I think it would also be pretty hilarious, too.
I mean, it would also probably solidify my decision to avoid skates of any kind now that I’m almost 40.
