"Rising spring temperatures teasing early summer feel" by: Jessica Shepard

The official first day of spring was last week and I feel like temperatures have been nearing summer staples for weeks.
Sure, we had that last, teeny tiny cold front blow through and last roughly two days.
But, now we’re topping the mid-80s and I’m not impressed.
It just feels like the actual spring weather I used to know and love is gone!
I mean, during my childhood we could expect a little chill even on Easter morning and now I’m stuck slathering on sunscreen just to survive taking the dogs out for a potty break.
And don’t get me started on outside events – if there hadn’t been such a strong breeze this past Saturday, I would have been suffering at the annual “Great Steak Cook Off.”
Now it’s just me trying to brace against the summer heat and madness.
Personally, that means I’m fighting with mom about setting the thermostat at 75 degrees during the daytime hours and 73 at night.
And it’s not any real suffering to have such temperatures because I’m nearly used to it anyways.
I mean, I can acclimate fairly easily and don’t’ have much to complain about as long as there is airflow in whichever room I’m taking up space in.
But, when my siblings come home to visit, they crank it on down to 70 degrees flat – 68 in the case of my brother’s preference when he manages to come home for a visit.
He’s argued with mom plenty of times before about air conditioner efficiency and his personal comfort while he’s home, but I honestly think he’s exaggerating the heat he feels.
Most of the time, I just remind him to open his bedroom door and we can re-direct some airflow with a few more fans.
Usually, my sister can stick it out with me at 73 as long as she keeps her bedroom door open and doesn’t bundle up from bed too much.
All of our bedrooms have their own ceiling fans and they work fairly well given the circumstances.
Plus, who lives in Texas without a fan?!
I think the lack of a ceiling fan is a deal breaker and honestly makes it even harder to manage temperatures in places like hotel rooms or RV rentals.
Still, unfortunately, our shared hallway takes a sharp 90-degree angle and requires a bit more maneuvering to ensure the fans help push the air through the entire space.
Still, while I was working on this column, I was curious as to when the first official day of summer was going to crop up.
Apparently, this year it falls on Sunday, June 21.
That means we have roughly 90 days until summer hits and I’m eyeballing our pool with longing each and every day.
Of course, it’s gone a bit green since we closed it for the winter, so we’ve got to take some time whipping it back into crystal-clear blue shape.
I’m sure that’s going to take some precedence on one of my mostly free weekends and that also means I may be stuck scrubbing the sidewalls as if I’m stirring up some giant cauldron.
Even then, the work is worth it for the reward of logging sometime in the pool before the water gets too hot and I feel like I’m in chlorine soup.
Either way, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we don’t go from mild and manageable weather to drought-like heat and oppressive humidity in the morning any time soon.
