A few weeks ago, someone assumed my age – incorrectly - and I got to delight in proving them wrong.
Now, I know that I’m the youngest person at the Sentinel, but I’m also creeping closer to turning 40.
I can confess to being pleasantly surprised and very amused during the little mishap and still have a smile on my face days later.
Though now I’m worried about that person’s eyesight.
Said person had assumed I was in my mid-20s and adamantly refused to believe I was more than a decade older than them.
Of course, I was able to use my driver’s license to set the record straight, but I also thanked them for the assumption, too.
It’s nice to know that my self-care routine has kept me looking noticeably younger than I had expected.
Honestly, it’s probably the easiest regimen because I don't invest too much time to worry about specific brands or trends.
No, I stick to drinking lots of water, moisturizing when necessary and making sure to always wear sunscreen when being outoors for more than a handful of minutes at a time.
Usually, I’d blame it on my off-the-wall hair dye choice for the moment, but I’m between colors and still trying to decide which color to do next.
It’ll probably be this oddball rose gold shade that shows up fairly pink more than anything, but it’s the next box in the rotation, so I’ll be sporting it soon enough.
In fact, I’ve finally reached the point where locals are used to my dye jobs and I get asked about what my next color choice is more than getting side-eyed or avoided.
Even better, my mom has pretty much given up on trying to coerce me into maintaining some semblance of normalcy when it comes to my hair.
And to be truthful, I’ve been doing weird hair colors since I graduated high school in 2006.
I’ve had everything from blue to hot pink and all sorts of colors and styles in between.
I just used to always fall back on blue because I had found a brand of dye I liked best that faded out to a silver color when the blue washes away.
Unfortunately, that brand has been discontinued and I’ve been trying to pin down alternative options for well over a year!
Still, it’s fun when I go to schools and get to take pictures of kids because it definitely gets their attention and leads to the best pictures – or so I believe.
My other argument for having blue hair is that it’s more temporary than something like tattoos or a piercing and that usually gets most other professionals to just laugh it off.
Not that there’s any sort of problem with tattoos or piercings for me - I’ve got plenty of friends and chosen family members with both to varying degrees.
Truthfully, I’ve never understood why it was such a big deal if the art wasn’t offensive and didn’t hamper anyone from doing their job.
I mean, things could be so much worse than abnormal hair and other body modifications!
