"County follows state trends" by: Mike Reddell

   In the top state runoff races Tuesday, Matagorda County voters followed Texas trends – but the percentages for the statewide and county results in each race differed.
  Tuesday, unofficial Matagorda County results showed 2,529 registered-voter ballots cast, or 11.40% of the county’s total number of registered voters of 22,192.
  In the highly publicized results from Tuesday’s runoff election, Ken Paxton won the Republican nomination over four-time incumbent John Cornyn, by a statewide vote of 885,949, 63.8%, for Paxton, and 501,725, 36.2%, for Cornyn.
  In Matagorda County, Paxton received 1,688 votes, 76.19%, to Cornyn’s 527 votes, 23.81%.
  In the statewide Democratic primary runoff race for Lieutenant Governor, Vikki Goodwin won the Democratic nomination with 374,804 votes, 67.8%, to Marcos Isaias Velez’s 178,249, 32.2%. 
  In Matagorda County’s Democratic primary, Goodwin received 208 votes, 68.65%, to Velez’s 95 votes, 31.35%.
  In the statewide Attorney General race, Mayes Middleton received 755,593 votes, 55.2%, to win the Republican nomination, to challenger Chip Roy’s 612,171, 44.85%.
  In Matagorda County, Middleton received 1,425 votes, 64.86%, to Roy’s total of 772 votes, 35.14%.
  In the statewide Democratic runoff race for Attorney General, Nathan Johnson won the nomination with 332,477 votes, 60.5%, to challenger Joe Jaworski, who had 217,009, 39.55%.
  In Matagorda County, Johnson received 160 votes, 52.46%, to Jaworski’s 145 votes, 47.54%.
  In a high-profile Republican Party race in Texas for the Railroad Commissioner nomination, Bo French defeated Jim Wright.  
  The election was quite close and French wasn’t declared the winner until Wednesday morning.
  In Matagorda County, French had 1,194 votes, 56.32%, to Wright’s 926, 43.68%.
