Aquatics Center moves to reality

From BCCDC

The Aquatics Center of Matagorda County is officially moving from vision to reality, with construction scheduled to begin in July on the county’s first year-round public aquatics facility.
The Aquatics Center is a collaborative investment in the future of Matagorda County.
The project is the result of a partnership between the Bay City Community Development Corporation, the City of Bay City, Matagorda County, and Wellness Matagorda County.
Upon completion, the facility will be operated by the YMCA of the Golden Crescent, bringing proven aquatic, youth development, and wellness programming to local residents.
The Aquatics Center will feature an indoor competition pool for swim instruction, water safety education, fitness, and competitive swimming.
Outside, families will enjoy a recreation pool with water slides and other attractions, while a dedicated children’s cove will provide a safe space for younger swimmers.
The facility will serve residents of all ages and support swim programming for students throughout Matagorda County, including those in Bay City, Matagorda, Palacios, Tidehaven, and Van Vleck ISDs.
Located adjacent to the Bay City Civic Center, the facility will be able to be used year-round.
“For generations, water has been an important part of life in Matagorda County,” said Jim Folse, president of Bay City Community Development Corporation.
“The Aquatics Center will provide opportunities for children to learn lifesaving swimming skills, for families to stay active together, and for residents of all ages to enjoy the benefits of aquatics close to home.”
The Aquatics Center is expected to open in mid-2027.
Significant investment from the Bay City Community Development Corporation, the City of Bay City, and Matagorda County has made the Aquatics Center possible.
Additional support from local businesses, organizations, foundations, and individual donors is helping strengthen this community resource for future generations.
“We are grateful for the leadership and commitment of our public partners, as well as the generosity of Prosperity Bank, our first private philanthropic supporter,” said Melanie Townsend, Executive Director of the Bay City Community Development Corporation.
“This project reflects what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision.
“We hope many others will join us in creating a facility that will serve Matagorda County families for generations to come.”
