Bay City traveled to Wharton last Friday for the first of two scrimmages with other schools.
Blackcat Head Coach Robert Jones talks this week about the Aug. 15 scrimmage with Wharton and looks ahead to the Angleton scrimmage that will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Aug. 21, at Memorial Stadium.
“It went well but we started slow on offense, but I expected that with losing so many of our offensive skill guys from last year, but the main thing is we got out healthy,” said Jones.
“We played well on the defensive side of the ball, a couple of blown assignments here and there, but that happens the first time you get to strap it up against another opponent.
“But the biggest improvement in football is from the first scrimmage to the second.
“I like where we are at, but we have a lot of stuff to clean up going into this week against Angleton,” the coach added.
“They have a great program that made the semifinals in 5A division 1 last year.
“I look for us to play a cleaner scrimmage and solidify some positions kids are fighting for before heading into week one against Sweeny,” Jones said.
“We will put in a great week of practice this week and I know the boys will be ready to battle Thursday,” he added.
