Recent fire inspection prompts waiver request for jail

Issues of liability should a fire occur in the Matagorda County Jail surfaced in a discussion over seeking a waiver from the state over the lack of fire sprinklers in three cells for violent prisoners at the commissioners court meeting Monday morning.
Commissioners authorized sending the waiver request to the State Commission on Jail Standards after a fire inspection Jan. 5 found the cells didn’t have sprinklers.
“This has never been brought up before. I don’t know why it was brought up now,” Sheriff Frank Osborne told commissioners.
