Final review for STP units 3&4 set Nov.19

Final review and approval for South Texas Project’s license application for Units 3 and 4 is scheduled by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency Nov. 19 in Washington, D.C.
That hearing will be for a Combined Operating License (COL) for Units 3 and 4 Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWR).
The hearing caps a review process that began Sept. 20, 2007, when the application for the COL was first submitted.
“We’re moving forward,” said Buddy Eller, general manager, Corporate Communications and External Affairs at STP Nuclear.
If Units 3 and 4 are approved by the NRC, that will bring 800 permanent new employees to STP, Eller told a local group recently.
In addition, as STP’s older employees – about 44 percent of its workforce - begin to retire, the nuclear operating station will be hiring 500 employees over the next five years, Eller commented at STP’s annual media luncheon last week.
“We want to make sure we have a pipeline for employment,” Eller said.
STP now has 1,200 employees – Matagorda County’s largest employer, he noted.
