Girls basketball gets under way; boys teams to follow

The Bay City Lady Blackcats, loaded with experience from a deep run in last year’s state playoffs, are the area’s marquee team as the girls high school basketball season kicks off for Bay City, Tidehaven and Van Vleck.
“Our goal is, first, to be district champions this year. But, after that, we are really expecting this to be a great year in the playoffs,” said second year coach Bay City coach Liz Griffin.
The Lady Cats have seven seniors returning from last year’s 23-16 team that advanced to the Region 4 semi-finals, falling to eventual state finalist Liberty Hill.
The team’s 6-4 district record was tied with Wharton for second best in District 27-4A behind 9-1 El Campo.
Among the seniors are team captain Ma’kayla Woods and Sha’dasia Wilcox, both of whom have put up healthy numbers in the season’s early going.
