"Port authority seeks $24M for barge terminal project" by: Mike Reddell
Port of Bay City Authority’s application for $24 million in state funding for its proposed barge terminal next to Matagorda Harbor will get a letter of support from commissioners court.
The 147-acre site is Corps of Engineers permitted and “shovel-ready,” POBCA Chairman Mike Griffith told commissioners court at its regular meeting Monday.
POBCA owns Matagorda Harbor and a bond issue for the adjacent barge terminal project – also on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway - was rejected by voters in November 2014, when two other bond issues countywide also failed.
This time, the port authority is seeking about $24 million from the TxDOT Maritime Division and the proposed commercial, industrial and recreational development already passed the first phase of the application process and made it to second-phase consideration.
