"Annual Spring beach cleanups Saturday in Matagorda, Sargent" by: Jessica Shepard

The Annual Spring Beach Cleanup will be this Saturday at Matagorda and Sargent beaches.
The Matagorda Beach cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22, at Jetty Park on Matagorda Beach.
Last September saw more than 8,200 volunteers picking up 172,853 pounds of trash across the Texas coast.
“This is a very fun and worthwhile event for all ages,” said Peggy Stanley, Matagorda Beach cleanup coordinator.
“I’m hoping for the same number of volunteers as last year or more. More would be wonderful!”
Last fall a total of three miles of Matagorda Beach were cleaned by 240 volunteers for a sum of 12,000 pounds or 6 tons of garbage.
Sargent Beach also will host a cleanup with the same hours at County Park, FM 457 and CR 230; otherwise known as Canal Drive.
Sargent saw five miles of beach cleaned by 134 volunteers for a total of 7,275 pounds of trash, or about 3.6 tons in September.
Both cleanups have check-ins starting at 8:30 a.m.
