"Tidehaven trustees give all teachers $3,000 salary boost by: Jessica Shepard

Tidehaven trustees approved a $3,000 increase in pay for all teachers.
“The trustees took a very strong stand and raised the teachers’ salary scale,” said TISD Superintendent Dr. Andrew Siegrist.
“It was very important to the trustees that we try to be as competitive as possible with the area schools. Also, the trustees were so excited about our preliminary STAAR scores.”
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) are a series of state-mandated standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student’s achievements and knowledge learned in that grade level.
The state average in fifth-grade reading is 71 percent and Markham Elementary fifth-graders sit at 79 percent.
“Those students are eight points above the state average and Blessing fifth grade was slightly below the state average at 68 percent,” added Siegrist.
Fifth-grade math scores averaged at 81 percent across the state.
“At Blessing Elementary, there was a 90 percent average and Markham students it 97 percent as their average; both well above the state average,” he said.
At the junior high level, eighth-grade reading is at 76 percent statewide and 78 percent at TISD.
“In eighth-grade mathematics, the state average is 74 percent and we’re right there at 74 percent, too,” said Siegrist.
“These scores motivated our board to provide more incentives to our teachers with this pay raise.”
