Taking their oaths of office at last week’s council meeting were, from left, Councilman Brent Marceaux, Mayor Robert Nelson, Councilman Jason Childers and Council Member Becca Sitz.

Mayor Robert Nelson and council members Jason Childers, Brent Marceaux and Becca Sitz were sworn into office at council’s regular meeting June 13.
The council members were elected in the city’s May 4 election, while Nelson defeated Julie Estlinbaum in the June 8 mayoral runoff. Estlinbaum remains a council member.
Plaques were presented to former Mayor Mark Bricker, who served from 2010 to 2019, and former Council Member Crystal Folse, who served from 2013 to 2019.
Councilman Bill Cornman recommended a mentoring plan to for new council members Nelson and Marceaux, who has previous council experience.
Childers, who is the new mayor pro tem, was chosen to guide the two in the mentoring plan.
Last Thursday’s meeting also represented the start of a new government system, where voters replaced the former mayor-council form of government with a mayor-council/city manager system.
Also new is the mayor becomes part of city council and a voting member, which the mayor previously couldn’t do.
