New Sargent bridge takes shape

The Sargent swing bridge replacement project on FM 457 is taking shape 10 months into construction. The columns for the main span bridge and two of the corkscrew columns on the north side are complete, said Michael Zanella, senior project manager, for the main contractor, Irving-based Austin Bridge & Road. The piling operation is more than 60% complete and will complete the south side piles in the next 12 weeks. The precast supplier, Bexar Concrete out of San Antonio, has completed 24 of the 42 caps and will begin to cast the main span beams next week and the slab beams for the corkscrew bridge in three weeks. “We anticipate to start setting main span caps later this month, then the main span beams in October,” Zanella said.
