"Council retreats from parallel parking plan" by: Mike Reddell

   City Council backed off a plan to implement parallel parking on certain stretches of Texas 60 and Texas 35 downtown after a determined outcry from merchants near or on the courthouse square at council’s regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 5.
   County Judge Nate McDonald addressed council at the first of its meeting and asked if the new state law that permits comments on agenda items would allow him to speak later.
   While the city’s parallel parking proposal – presented by City Manager Richard Morton – didn’t include any of the courthouse square or nearby angle parking on 6th Street and Avenue G, five business owners told council that any parallel parking would be bad for business.
