"Matthews, BCISD part ways by mutual agreement" by: Mike Reddell & Jessica Shepard

Patrick Matthews said his final good-byes to Bay City Blackcat coaches and players Thursday, Feb. 27.

“Today is my last day that’s what’s happening,” Matthews said Thursday afternoon – after talking to coaches and before he addressed his former players.

Matthews said by mutual agreement with the district, he’s leaving his position as Blackcat Head Football Coach and Athletic Director – and the school board will begin looking for his successor.

“I decided to part ways and look to get back to Houston and they will begin looking for someone else,” Matthews said.

“This benefits everyone,” he added.

Matthews was hired by BCISD in April 2018 and posted a 4-7 record in 2018 - defeating El Campo and taking the Blackcats into the first-round playoffs that year - followed by last year’s 0-9 record.

Matthews came to BCISD after serving as offensive coordinator for 6A Seven Lakes High School in Katy.

“It was a mutual agreement to part ways,” BCISD school board president Bob Klepac said Thursday night.
“We’re going to post the position by the end of today or tomorrow,” Klepac said.

“I don’t have any comments at this time,” said Dr. Marshall Scott, III, BCISD Superintendent.
