The Bay City school board approved the $2 million purchase of Central Plant equipment for Bay City High School from MacMillan James Equipment Company and Systecon, at trustees meeting Monday night, Feb. 16.
Mechanical engineer Ed Stacey told the board, “The district is in a midterm renovation of the high school.”
“At the central plant, your chillers and boilers are in very bad shape.” Chillers and boilers are part of the heating and air conditioning system.
Chillers are near the end of their useful life, according to manufacturers, Stacey said.
The feedback received from contractors was that it will be very hard to find pipefitters for the new system, he said.
“This is an intensely pipefitting project and it will be hard to find pipefitters in the area because of all the activity on the oil rigs,” Stacey said.
That led to exploration of other options, he said.
