BCHS players to apply ‘Blackcat Way’ everywhere

Sentinel photo/Mike Reddell
Head Blackcat Football Coach Lupe Florez works with players on the first day of two-a-day training.

“The Blackcat Way” is the motto for the 2015 Bay City High School football season and to Head Coach Lupe Florez that carries way more significance than a simple phrase.
After 10 years of not having good Blackcat teams, Florez told players and their parents last week, some negatives surface.
“But that’s not the Blackcat Way!” he stressed during the “Meet the Coaches” session last Thursday, July 30.
The coach said that he and his staff had researched the football archives for BCHS and Hilliard High School records.
They found that both schools have a combined five state football championships.
“Bay City is one of the most storied teams in Texas” since the early 1900s, Florez reminded players and parents alike.
“We’re going to play and act ‘The Blackcat Way.’”
The Blackcats began two-a-day workouts Monday – the beginning of the new season.

Florez teaches different lessons at camp

Sentinel photos/Mike Reddell
Learning how to be competitive and have fun playing football was part of what BCHS Head Football Coach Lupe Florez and his coaching staff stressed in this week Blackcat Football Camp at the BCHS practice field. Blackcat Offensive Coordinator Brent Bennett (far left) instructed the campers - seventh through ninth grade- to show they’re enjoying things following the completion of each warmup exercise.

A lot of football coaches will talk about the attributes their players should have on the field, but Blackcat Head Football Guadalupe Florez also wants his teams to have fun – a lot more fun than their opponents.
Florez and his coaching staff had a shakeout cruise for the 2015 season as they hosted the Blackcat Football Camp for incoming third through sixth-graders - in one group - and seventh through ninth-graders Monday through Thursday (July 27-30) at the BCHS practice fields.
That shakeout is important since the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity Blackcat football teams begin the time-honored two-a-day workouts Monday, Aug. 3, signaling the start of the new season.
