Dear Editor
As a parent, grandparent, taxpayer, and supporter of our neighborhood public schools, I’m deeply concerned about the direction public education is heading under the Abbott regime.
Schools are losing teachers, campuses are closing, and decisions that should be made locally are increasingly being made in Austin without thought for local people and our children.
That’s why I was encouraged to learn about Gina Hinojosa’s education platform and learned that she is a true fighter for our public schools.
Rather than expanding school vouchers, Gina wants taxpayer dollars invested in the neighborhood public schools that educate the vast majority of Texas children.
She has also pledged to end the STAAR test, stop the state takeover of local school districts, appoint an educator to lead the Texas Education Agency, and use savings from auditing wasteful vendor contracts to help make Texas teachers among the highest paid in the nation.
Now that’s what I am talking about!
Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, we all can agree that we want great schools for our kids and excellent teachers who care and are happy in their jobs.
Texas has always believed that opportunity begins with education.
Gina Hinojosa agrees, and I hope our leaders will make strengthening public schools - not weakening them - the priority.
Sincerely,
Nora Reyna Dearing
