Moore House built for a prominent leader

The D.P. and Louise Moore home was built on block 60 in 1902 by builders Hatchett and Large.     The land was purchased from David Swickheimer on Nov. 20, 1894.     Lots 4 - 9 - 2404 Ave. E - were for the homesite, and the other half was used for pasture.

Halfmoon Lighthouse once guided mariners on Matagorda Bay

Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse still welcomes visitors to Port Lavaca. However, having been moved ashore from its perch above the waters of Matagorda Bay, it now performs that function for travelers entering Port Lavaca from the east on Texas 35, rather than for mariners arriving from the gulf.

When Bernerd Harding, 90, began a personal mission in 2009 to return to Germany to search for his pilot’s wings, little did he know what awaited him.

"Dennis served as county’s clerk, sheriff, state rep."

Thomas Mason Dennis, soldier and legislator, was born in Georgia on March 9, 1807, and moved to Texas in March 1835.     He settled in Bastrop and in September joined Capt. Robert M. Coleman’s company of volunteers that marched from Bastrop.

"Emmons-Cairnes newest City by the Sea Museum exhibit"

City by the Sea Museum presents their newest exhibit series, “If this Building Could Talk: The Emmons-Cairnes Building.”     This exhibit will be on display beginning March 11, through July 30.

Early development showed Midfield more than crossroads

Midfield was so named because it was in the midst of open fields practically equal distance from Ganado to the west, El Campo to the north, Bay City to the east, and Palacios to the south.     The townsite was laid out and subdivided by Curley C. Duson, Sr., of El Campo in 1903.
