   The Bay City High School Speech and Debate Team member Grant Friesenhahn competed at the UIL State Championship in Congressional Debate!   Grant placed among the top 32 debaters in the state of Texas.

   Van Vleck ISD’s new police chief Stephen Jimenez took his oath of office at the district’s regular school board meeting Monday night.  Jimenez has over 19 years of law enforcement experience including the Wharton Police Department, Wharton County Sheriff Office, and El Campo Police Department.

   Livestock Economist Dr. Andrew Griffith gave his beef market forecast and insight during the Gulf Coast regional Cattlemen’s Workshop & Trade Show, Jan. 11.  Griffith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Tennessee.

   The Port of Bay City Authority is looking at roughly $330,000 in possible Texas Parks and Wildlife Boating Access grant funds for the Matagorda Harbor Boat Ramp Project.  “There’s currently no cost for planning and engineering of the project,” said Anchor QEA’s Hayden Smith at the Jan. 9 meeting.

City Council filings begin for May 3 election

   Filing for the May 3 city election – for the mayor and three city council places – begins Jan. 15 and continues through Feb. 14.  Robert Nelson is the incumbent mayor.  The three council seats up for election are:  Position 3, held by Bradley Westmoreland.  Position 4, held by Becca Sitz.

   Bay City police responded to the second auto theft incident within a two-week period when officer Luis Moreno, was sent to 2300 7th Street in reference to a stolen vehicle at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8.
