Mary Helm’s writings provided first look at Matagorda beginning

   Mary Helm, pioneer teacher, the daughter of John Hutchinson and Janet (Henderson) Sherwood, was born on July 3, 1807, in Herkimer County, New York.    She began teaching at the age of 16 and was teaching in a district school when she became reacquainted with her former teacher,     Elias R.

   Thomas Mason Dennis, soldier and legislator, was born in Georgia on March 9, 1807, and moved to Texas in March 1835.     He settled in Bastrop and in September joined Capt. Robert M. Coleman’s company of volunteers that marched from Bastrop.     On Dec.

Early development showed Midfield more than crossroads

   Midfield was so named because it was in the midst of open fields practically equal distance from Ganado to the west, El Campo to the north, Bay City to the east, and Palacios to the south.     The townsite was laid out and subdivided by Curley C. Duson, Sr., of El Campo in 1903.

   Lack of education for the African-American population has been a persistent thread throughout U.S. history.      Prior to the Civil War, it was illegal in many states for African-Americans to be taught to read and write.
