   Matagorda County Historical Commission gave its 2023 report to Commissioners Court at its Jan. 22 meeting.    The report is mandated by the Texas Historical Commission.     During 2023, the MCHC was composed of 28 appointees. Four meetings and two historical marker dedications were held.

     January 18    At 1:21 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Avenue F about shots fired.    Dispatch notified officers that they had received multiple calls for shots fired but had limited information and no descriptions.

   After about 45 minutes in closed session, Van Vleck ISD trustees unanimously approved building demolition bids for O.H. Herman Junior High and E. Rudd Intermediate campuses during their regular monthly meeting Monday night.    All board members were present for the meeting.    The O.H.

   Matagorda County will participate in the City of Palacios TIRZ No. 1 after Commissioners Court heard arguments for and against the TIRZ at the court’s regular meeting Monday, Jan. 22.

   The 8th Annual Wild Game and Wine Camofest returns to downtown Bay City this Saturday, Jan. 27.    Scheduled from noon until 6 p.m., the rain-or-shine event is open to the public.    “Rain, Sleet, or Snow wear your camo!” said Main Street Program Director Tina Israel.

Ganado man dies in wreck near Markham

    A 23-year-old Ganado man was killed in a two-car collision at the intersection of Texas 35 and FM 1468 at Markham early Monday morning, Jan. 22, DPS Sgt. Stephen Woodard said.

"Sales tax rebates up for Bay City" by: Mike Reddell

   January sales tax rebates for Bay City and Palacios are both up from the same month last year.    Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations for January, 3.3 percent more than in January 2023.
