"New World Screwworm dominates Cattlemen’s event" by: Jessica Shepard

   Information on the New World Screwworm (NWS) dominated the Gulf Coast regional Cattlemen’s Workshop & Trade Show last week.  Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) Executive Director and Texas State Veterinarian Dr. Lewis Dinges explained the resurgence of NWS on Friday, Jan. 23.

   Dredging is finished at the Matagorda Harbor project and Port of Bay City Authority Commissioners were told at their meeting Jan. 14.  Now the Port Authority is awaiting word from the Corps of Engineers.  Anchor QEA’s Coastal Engineer Ian Fisher said the dredging was complete Jan.

   The 2026 election calendar is fast approaching for Texas and Matagorda County toward the March 3 primary.  Monday, Feb. 2 is the last day to register to vote in the joint primary election.  That’s quickly followed by Feb. 17, when early voting begins.  Feb.

Carney named VVISD AD, head football coach

   Van Vleck ISD officially announced Cody Carney as the new VVISD Athletic Director (AD) and Head Football Coach last week.  VVISD trustees made the unanimous decision on Tuesday, January 20.

Jakob Trevino makes All State Band for 2nd straight year

   Van Vleck High School junior Jakob Trevino was selected for the 2026 Texas All-State Band for the second consecutive year.   Trevino was one of several VVHS band had several members compete in Area auditions at Calallen HS  Trevino will be representing Van Vleck in San Antonio Feb.

Hudgins makes All State Choir 2 years in a row

   Bay City High School junior Dawson Hudgins earned a spot in the 2026 All-State Choir for the second year in a row.   Hudgins, a member of the Bay City High School Varsity Choir, Bella Voce, has qualified to perform with the 2026 Texas All-State Small School Choir.
