"Rice Festival Royalty crowned" by: Jessica Shepard

   Twenty-three local high school seniors took to Bay City High School’s auditorium stage last Saturday to find out who would be crowned as the 2023-2024 Bay City Lions Club Rice Festival Queen.    Van Vleck High School senior Hope Cornett was crowned Rice Festival Queen on Oct. 14.

Rice Festival begins Oct. 19

   The 77th Annual Bay City Lions Club Rice Festival opens from 5-11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds.    Gate entry is $10 per person all day.     This year’s carnival is provided by Kenny’s Funland Carnival.

   The Matagorda County Cattlemen’s Association presented its “Silver Spur Award” to Clyde Ashcraft’s family at its 39th annual meeting and banquet on Oct. 12.    The “Silver Spur Award” is the most prestigious honor given by the ranching and livestock industry in Matagorda County.

"Arson fire destroys trailer home" By Dan Shook

   The Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, the Bay City Fire Marshal, and the Bay City Police Department were dispatched to a trailer home fire at 2101 Horn Rd #2, on Monday, Oct. 9, at about 7 p.m.

"Household Hazardous Waste Day Saturday" by: Jessica Shepard

   The Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds.    Household hazardous waste is any product labeled: toxic, corrosive, poison, flammable, combustible, or an irritant that is ready for disposal.
