"Early vote for Nov. 8 election is underway" by: Mike Reddell

2022 Rice Festival Car Show attracts 69 registered entries

   There were 69 registered entries for the 2022 Bay City Lions Club Rice Festival Car show at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds, said car show chairman Hawes Dickerson.    “We had folks drive in from just down the road and a few trailer-in or cruise over from almost 75 miles away, Dickerson said.

Suspect in murder investigation turns himself into Matagorda County Jail

   An 18-year-old man – sought as the suspect in the investigation of a fatal shooting on Whitson Street Oct. 11 – turned himself in the Matagorda County Jail Oct. 17, Bay City police said.    The suspect is identified as Jerome Sanford, police said.     Police responded to a 911 call at 11:11 p.m.

"2022 Rice Dish Roundup winners announced" by: Jessica Shepard

   Over 80 entries were featured at the annual “Rice Dish Round-Up,” Oct. 18.    “We actually received 110 recipes for the contest but 85 showed up for judging,” said Matagorda County Extension Office 4-H Administrative Assistant Cynthia Page.

   Van Vleck ISD trustees unanimously approved promoting Superintendent John O’Brien to Superintendent Emeritus during their Oct. 17 meeting.    All board members were present except for Terry Blackmon.    O’Brien will be officially promoted to Superintendent Emeritus on Wednesday, Jan.

"Main Street board approves façade grant" by: Jessica Shepard

   Main Street Program board members unanimously approved a $5,000 façade grant for Burlap Sack owner Debbie Franz during their regular meeting Wednesday, Oct. 12.    Board members present included Justin Rhodes, Tami Savage, Joan Meyers, Carol Huitt, Fran Baker, and Elizabeth Hewitt.

"Rice Festival opens Thursday" by: Jessica Shepard

   Official Rice Festival festivities open Thursday, Oct. 20 from 4-11 p.m. at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds.    Gate entry is $5 per person from noon until 5 p.m. then it goes up to $10 from 5-11 p.m.    Parking is free around the fairgrounds and VIP parking passes are available for $20.
